Above the craggy cliffs of Palo Duro Canyon is a flat plain almost devoid of trees. Many pioneers made their homes on this windswept prairie. We pass by this old house on our way to hike the southern part of Palo Duro Canyon. We often said we needed to stop and explore it. Although the structure is intact, you can see sky through the roof and the ground through the floor. Old canning jars still litter the kitchen. We found a scrap of newspaper from 1940 just blowing in the trees that have sprung up around the house. The old shell is now home to skunks, bobcats, and many snakes. That its still standing is a testament to the hardiness of the panhandle pioneers.
